Confirmation is the second album after Portrait of Sheila Jordan in 1962 from Blue Note. Ms. Jordan waited for more than a decade to get the opportunity to sing the kind of songs she likes with the musicians with whom she liked to work. She said that, if given a chance to record another album, she would dedicate it to her daughter Tracy and to children all over the world. She got that chance. The first side of the original LP, consisting of five tracks, relate to children in one way or another, including Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “My Favorite Things” and Dr. Seuss’ “Because We’re Kids.” Ms. Jordan brings her distinct improvisational style, influenced mostly by instrumentalists like Charlie Parker rather then singers, and makes each of the songs into something uniquely her own. This is illustrated in Charlie Parker’s composition, “Confirmation.” Sheila still performs “Pearlie’s Swine,” composed by Steve Kuhn, as part of her live repertoire almost three decades later.
